First Mate Richard Smith met Nath as he swung his leg over Betsey’s rail.
“Tell me what happened,” Nath growled.
Richard handed Nath a spyglass and took him to the forward bow.
“Just after I set the lads to their tasks, a jolly boat pulled aside us with an officer and four marines from HMS Beaver over there. Said his name was Lieutenant Beverly and demanded to come aboard.”
“And you approved?”
“Didn’t see as I had any choice. She had her guns trained on us, and Madras is British territory. So I piped ’im aboard. He ordered me to assemble the crew. Sent a man to walk through the ranks. He pulled Hulan out and accused ’im of being a British deserter. Course I set ’im straight. But he took ’im anyway. That’s when I sent the note.”
“Did they board other ships?”
“That they did. And off-loaded at least one sailor from each, sometimes two.”
