Sarah clutched Jacob’s note to her chest and danced around the garden. He’ll call tomorrow and then . . . What? Her smile dropped.
Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel. “Sarah, are you out here?”
“Yes, Father.” Sarah abruptly stopped dancing and shoved Jacob’s note into her pocket. “I’m just by the kitchen garden.”
Captain Gardner rounded the corner. “I heard the front door close. Did someone call?”
“Er, not precisely, but Jacob will call tomorrow. The America arrived in New York two weeks ago, and, I can hardly believe it, but he brought back an elephant and sold it.”
“Did he get a good price?”
“I don’t know. But he must have sold it for more than what he paid for it.”
