Jacob watched the mahout guide his charge with a short hooked pole. The elephant turned her head with a wide side eye but continued forward into the hold. Crewmen quickly lifted the lower gangplank.
“Right.” Jacob extended his hand to Benj. “The next time we meet ashore, we’ll take on supplies at Cape Town.”
“Good luck with your cargo, Brother.”
“Luck has nothing to do with it. For a small investment, I shall reap great profits, marry our lovely cousin Sarah, and set up housekeeping.” Jacob winked. “The world is full of possibilities.”
Benj clapped his brother on the back as Jacob mounted the America’s gangplank.
“I’m sure you’ll earn your fortune, provided the elephant survives.
