“I understand you encountered privateers as you neared Boston?” Hasket raised his eyebrows.
“We did. Both our ships sailed alone, so we were evenly matched in that sense. After we released a volley of cannon fire, the privateer broke off our engagement.” Nath shrugged. “The remainder of our voyage was uneventful.”
“Excellent. These times require a cool head such as yours has proven to be. Captain Silsbee, I have a proposal for you, if you’d like to hear it.”
Nath smiled. “I’m always open to your ideas.”
“I’ve enjoyed watching your career in my employ. You have skill, ambition, and a clear head—all attributes I look for in my ship’s captains. I’m building a new ship for the India trade. Not so large as the Grand Turk was, but able to carry a substantial cargo. I’d like you to accept her command. Alternatively, I can offer you part ownership in any other ship you sail for me.”
Nath’s jaw dropped in shock before he quickly closed his mouth. What an opportunity! But is it what I want? Now that I’ve had a taste of owning my own ship, do I want to go back to percentages in someone else’s?
