“We’ve got company.” John passed Geordie his spyglass.
Geordie adjusted the lens. A British sloop of war in full sail came into view, and it was on a direct course for the Belisarius.
“What do you think? Will she board us or sink us?”
Geordie’s mouth went dry. We’re a new ship with a full cargo of coffee, tea, indigo, and cotton. He swallowed. My duty is to bring Belisarius safely home.
“She probably wants to board us,” Geordie muttered.
“Will you allow it? We’re a bigger ship and probably faster. If we aim our guns properly, we can surprise her and get away.”
“You really think we can outsmart a Royal Navy sloop?” Geordie shook his head. John was nothing if not impetuous.
“Stranger things have happened. We should at least try.”
