“There’s more than enough to see you through until I return.”
“See me through,” Lizzie said blankly.
“Yes, in case you need things I haven’t thought of. But you need to be careful the money lasts. You can’t go to my family for help.”
“Surely—”
“I’m sorry, but they’ll never believe you. And even if they do, you have no claim on me. Sophia doesn’t look like me at all.” He shrugged.
Lizzie’s mouth fell open. How can you sit there and shrug when you just denied our child?
A tear rolled down Lizzie’s cheek. “You know I have never lain with anyone but you.”
“Do I?”
“Yes,” Lizzie whispered. “You do. Why else would you bring gifts for Sophia?”
“There’s nothing between us, Lizzie. We kept each other warm, but that’s all it was. I’m sorry if you thought we had any other connection.”
