After leaving Hamburg’s port, Nath and Richard stood on deck watching the North Sea waves grow taller. Above them, crewmen took in the sails.
“Wind’s gonna blow up right smart,” Richard commented. “Already struck the royal and gallant sails.”
Nath grunted. I don’t want another experience like the Sally. “Reef the mainsail. I’ll take the wheel. You can spell me later.”
“What about me?” William asked.
“Stay below! I’ve got too much to think about to be worried about you. I promised Mother to keep you safe, and that means you stay below until the storm blows itself out. That is a direct order from your captain. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir!”
“Lad needs to learn sometime,” Richard said.
“He does, but not today. You have your orders.”
