He liked spending the evening with her. If the baby was awake, he played with her until Lizzie scooped her up and settled her into a small cot for the night. Seeing their faces together, Geordie felt a tug on his heart. But it wasn’t strong enough to tie him down.
At the cottage, Lizzie and Geordie sat outside in the twilight. When he wrapped his arm around her, Lizzie put her head on his shoulder.
Every night, she asked him to stay. And every night, he declined and explained that he had to be down at the shipyard. That the Belisarius was the best ship the Crowninshields had ever built. That she’d be the real star of the company.
“As captain, I am involved at every stage of the Belisarius’s construction,” he said. He felt her stiffen in his arms at the mention of his true passion. “I know all her secrets and how to sail her under all conditions.”
Lizzie stayed quiet.
