The harbormaster’s office was at the front of a small warehouse on the quay.
“Captain Sizbee.” The dapper official stood. “What brings you to my humble bureau?”
“Monsieur Martin, I’ve had a change of heart. I find I can’t bear being separated from my fiancée a moment longer than necessary, so instead of leaving three days from now as I originally applied, I want to leave on the next tide.”
“You have not mentioned your femme before. She must be very beautiful for you to give up trade opportunities.”
Nath grinned. “She holds my heart.”
“I never took you for a romantique. I sympathize, but it is a difficult matter to change the papers.” Martin shrugged. “My clerk cannot do it by this evening’s tide.”
Nath changed tactics. “These are dangerous times for you, are they not, Monsieur Martin?”
