Edward lifted his wife’s chin. “Can you understand? I’m not like them. I’m not a fighter. I don’t care about status and ships and mansions. The only thing I’ve ever wanted was your love and to be left alone. And the reason I didn’t take you to Salem is that I can hardly bear to be in the same room with any of them. I am a disappointment. A reminder that, unlike my brothers, I’m not willing to hold my ground against adversity. I fish, Mary. I don’t want to clerk for my brother or anyone else.”
