“Ah, so you’re thinking about Edward. His wife isn’t our sort, but he’s wed now. So that won’t change.”
“Wed and living in Marblehead, consorting with fishermen instead of sailing for us,” George grumbled. “Thus far, he refuses to even ship out as a mate, but I have a proposition for him. William Gray has a ship going down to the West Indies, and he’s agreed to send Edward along as a clerk. He’s twenty-seven now. He ought to be holding a command for us instead of relying on me to find him a clerk’s billet.”
Mary put her hand on her husband’s arm. “But that’s the problem, isn’t it? Edward doesn’t want our help, and he doesn’t want to master a merchant ship. He’s happy as he is.”
“In Marblehead? Fishing? No, I cannot accept that. We have a company, and he needs to come home to his responsibilities and be part of our business.
