After concluding business at Calcutta, I determined the best course of action was to return directly to Salem. Successful trading proved impossible due to continued bad market prospects. After paying all expenses accrued during the voyage, I doubt there will be a dollar of profit left. This voyage, if not a complete failure, is certainly a severe disappointment from a business and personal perspective.
Nath put down his pen and rubbed his eyes. Most likely, Mr. Derby would either conclude Nath’s career as a ship’s officer or, if he was in a benevolent frame of mind, confine him to interminable coastal runs.
