Approaching the harbor area at Pelu Penang, Nath smiled with relief. There were only two ships in port. Then he frowned. How can that be? Am I too early to trade—or too late? Boarding the jolly boat with three crewmen, Nath pulled on the oars to reach the shoreline. Ships anchored as close as a hundred yards from George Town, the small village that grew up around Fort Cornwallis, so he didn’t have to row long before stepping onto the beach. As he did, a factor walked forward with a wide smile and his hand out.
“Francis Crawford,” he announced. “Welcome to George Town. Allow me to offer my services. Whatever you need, I can arrange it for you.”
