Hasket steepled his fingers and stared at Elias, who began shifting in his seat.
“Is there a problem, Father? You look as if you don’t recognize me.”
Hasket shook his head. “Just thinking about the adventures you’ve had. I’ve hardly been beyond Essex County.”
“I thought you didn’t care for sailing.”
“I’ll never know either way. But I do know I like making money, and that’s what I intend to do. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Enos Briggs is building a new ship by our wharf.”
“I saw it from Derby Street, of course, but I haven’t looked closely at it yet. It’s hardly decent weather for strolls on the beach or even the wharf.”
Hasket cleared his throat. “Well,” he said, giving his son a disapproving look. “If you can spare the time and inconvenience, you will see that Enos Briggs is building a magnificent ship. She’ll be the largest ship launched into Salem Harbor.”
