“It was so exciting!” Patsy grinned. “About one o’clock, when the president was a couple miles outside of town, our artillery fired. We could see the smoke from the courthouse. And then every church bell in town rang for the longest time. Everyone scurried to get in line for the procession to meet him.
“He rode his horse when he came into town. It was the most beautiful pure-white stallion. And he had on his uniform, and his boots gleamed in the sun. It was incredible.”
