I hear shouting and swearing. Praise God! The thanes prod a dozen men roped together. I wait outside the queen’s wagon until Bassus comes to me.
“My lady, we have enough fishermen to sail the boats, and a pilot who knows the way south.” Bassus prods a stooped, grizzled man forward. “Tell the lady your name.”
“I be Hud.”
“And you know the route to Kent?” I ask.
Hud shrugs. “I been past the Humber. I can get you there.”
“And beyond?”
Hud shakes his head and laughs in a way that shows his yellow teeth. “None of us knows that.”
Hud doesn’t inspire me with much confidence, but he’s the only pilot we have. “How did you persuade those men to help us?” I ask Bassus.
“I said if they didn’t come with us, I’d kill them where they stood.” Bassus glances at Hud. “I may kill them yet.”
