King Edwin is fascinated by the pope’s letter. He keeps feeling the parchment and holding it up to the light. Paulinus is nervous. I can tell he wants to snatch back the document before my uncle spills something on it or drops it.
“May I read the letter from His Holiness to you, Your Majesty?” Paulinus beseeches, and my uncle motions for a servant to bring more ale.
“What could he write that has any interest to me? He’s too far away to be an effective ally.”
“Forgive me, but that’s not entirely true. Kings who follow the true faith are natural allies. With the pope’s blessing, you’ll gain more allies in the south. Not just Kent, but East Anglia as well. Please allow me to share the pope’s thoughts with you.”
“Do you agree, wife? Shall I listen to the man’s letter?”
