“Do you happen to have a copy of the king’s letter, as I’m sure you do of mine? It might be best if I read it first to ensure it will be well received.” I smile encouragingly. “You wouldn’t want the king to take offense.”
Paulinus looks shocked, though I’m not convinced he is. “Your Grace, it is a private letter from the pope to King Edwin. It is for their eyes alone.”
“Yet the scribe has already seen it, and no doubt the pope’s secretary. I’m sure, without a doubt, you have a copy, for what secrets could the pope have from you? Show me the letter, so we can be sure it will please the king. If you read the letter aloud, and insult the king and his warriors, how do you expect to complete your mission to baptize the king? Your pride could easily jeopardize the entire purpose of your presence. I advise you to show me the letter.”
Paulinus stiffens and protectively holds his sleeve close to his arm. “It is a private letter, Your Grace.”
“Nothing at court is private,” I admonish. “If you value the success of your mission, show me the letter.”
