“The Dyers?” Mano made a face. “I’d rather stay near you.”
Rama stroked Mano’s hair. “Darling, I hardly have time to spend with you now. I have to make the farm habitable and care for the refugees and the girls here.”
Mano started crying. “That’s not the point, Mama. At least in India I can see you sometimes. But if you send me to England...well, anything could happen. What if you get sick? Who’ll look after you?”
“I won’t get sick.”
“Mama, you told me a girl should be with her mother. You said we’d stay in India.”
