Rama left her new charges at the farm and caught the train for Pune. She hoped Mano was there. I haven’t seen my Precious Pearl in so long. Rama waved to the servant who opened the gates to Sharada Sadan. The school looked so established. The new dormitories, the classroom bungalow, the mature gardens. It was hard to think of starting from nothing again. Mano came down the steps to meet her mother. At fifteen she’s beginning to blossom, but her face is too serious. Mano hugged her mother tightly until Rama finally separated from her and patted her daughter’s cheek.
“Mama, I’m so excited to see you. I’ve applied to Bombay University. Miss Samuels says I’m ready for my entrance exams.”
“Let’s go inside.”
Mano held the door open and followed Rama to their bedroom. Rama sat on the bed so Mano could take off her sandals and wash her feet.
