Rama gathered women and girls from among the lost and the starving. Eyes listless, they followed Rama to the train station. Rama carefully bought a fist full of tickets and returned to her charges.
“Ladies, let’s board the train.”
Rama and Thakubai, now a Bible woman, stood by the carriage door helping the emaciated refugees. Rama saw disgust on the conductor’s face. You would leave them to starve, but I take them home. Not one will be lost.
A woman in the middle of the group lifted her foot to the bottom carriage step. “No.” Rama shook her head. “You can’t come.” I can’t take someone who’s deaf and mute. How could I teach her anything? The woman stepped onto the train and found a seat. Rama rolled her eyes. She was tired.
