How can I explain?
Rama takes her friend Judith, representative of her school's American Christian sponsors, to Varanasi. I think it's harder than she expected, because Rama has confront the faith and customs of the people she loved. People who weren't Christian. She wants Judith to see the funeral customs aren't without merit. But she can't explain it to herself. Rama loves her family, but they are lost to her. Rama thinks of a way to explain what Judith is looking at, more comfortable with a mental focus. Rama is a person of heart who hides in her mind.

“That’s Harish Chandra Ghat. It’s one of the cremation grounds. If a person’s cremated here, he reaches salvation. This doesn’t apply to women.” Rama shrugged.
“It’s horrific. Right here on the river bank?”
Rama thought of Bipin, Srinivas, and other family members who had been cremated. How the flames had freed their souls.
“Judith, it’s not what you think. Hindus believe cremation releases the soul from the physical body so the cycle of life can continue. They’re wrong, but it’s not... well, it isn’t what Christians do, but... the rites don’t always occur by rivers.”
