“We have information that at least one girl has converted and two more have told their families they accepted Christ. We cannot lend our names and reputations to such an endeavor.”
“I don’t encourage the girls to convert. In fact, I inform them Sharada Sadan is a school for Hindu widows only. I tell them they can’t continue at the school if they convert.”
Judge Ranade stood. “Pandita Ramabai, you miss the point. Widows have no rights. Their families decide where they go and what they do. Your policy encourages these girls to think they can make their own decisions. They don’t have that right. Social change comes gradually. Your policies harm the cause of reform and we can’t be associated with them.”
Rama rose slowly while she formulated her response.
