“Pandita,” Godubai confided, “my father came to visit.”
“Is he well? And your family also?”
“Yes. My father stays with Professor Karve. Do you remember him? Professor Karve shared the living area with my brother in Bombay. Now he teaches at Fergusson College. He’s a widower.”
Rama put down her pen and gave Godubai her full attention. “Is there something you wish to tell me?”
“My father thinks I should remarry. He told me Professor Karve is willing to marry a widow. My father suggested he marry me.”
Rama sat in shock. Godubai was more than a student. She was invaluable to the school.
Rama cleared her throat. “I see. And what do you think?”
Godubai lowered her eyes. “I would like to marry.”
“He has a twelve-year-old son. And I don’t think the man’s health is good. He’s quite short.”
“Forgive me, but so are you, Pandita.”
