When Rama was baptized, she was content. She saw herself as part of the nuns' community at Wantage, as a person who wouldn't be alone again. Rama practiced her faith, but didn't preach it. Then detractors accused her of trying to convert her students. Rama began feeling ill at ease. She reads a book by Rev. William Haslam, a minister who wrote about being converted as he preached. Rama can't understand how this can be. She asks a Christian friend how a Christian can convert to being a Christian. Rama stands at yet another crossroads.

Sundrabai took the book out of Rama’s hands and looked directly into Rama’s eyes. “Pandita, conversion is about your heart, not your mind. That’s what the writer is explaining. Accept Christ as your redeemer; go where he leads. You’re conflicted, because you don’t trust Him. You change your outlook to suit whomever you’re with. It’s a meaningless effort. Missionaries think you don’t do enough. Brahmins revile you for loving widows. The Americans — well, who knows what they want? And you’re unsatisfied. But if you open your heart, Christ will fill it. And you’ll be at peace.”
Sundrabai gave Rama a kiss and left the room.
Rama sat up late turning the pages without reading. Am I a Christian?
