Rama was up before breakfast, going through the account books before her meeting with Sarah later that morning. One book showed receipts and expenditures of funds from the Ramabai Association. The master book listed total income and expenses. Smaller monthly sheets outlined costs for food, rent, supplies, and salaries for her, Abby Dennison, and the native teachers. Everything was written down, except for the things that weren’t. Well, no one could expect me to write down every purchase from a passing peddler or itemize every bandage in the clinic. Sarah will see everything’s in order and take over. This is a great weight off my mind. Rama closed the books, stacked them neatly on the table, and went to the dining room.
“Mama, you started before I woke up,” Mano complained.
