That evening, Rama stood at the side of the stage while Reverend Cook completed his introduction. She’d never seen so many people in one place. Men. Women. Young. Old. She closed her eyes, calling forth images of the two men who understood her best. Who knew the value of her work.
“Bipin, Srinivas, what am I to do? Everything depends on what I say tonight.” The men smiled.
“Recite,” Srinivas said. “Tell a story so powerful everyone knows it’s true.”
“Convince them only you can educate these girls.” Bipin said. “They want to do your god’s work. Show them how.”
Rama bowed her head. When she looked up, Cook beckoned her forward. Rama eyed the podium in the center of the stage. I’ll stand at the edge where everyone can see me. Rama stood quietly for several minutes until her mind was still and her stomach settled.
