A Great Day for Hindu Women
It must have been a bittersweet moment. Rama went to England to become a lady doctor, only to be told she could not hear well enough to attend the courses. Now Rama witnesses her cousin receive a medical degree in Philadelphia. Anandibai would be the first Hindu lady doctor. Rama was proud, but also, I think, a little envious. Rama must have wondered if her goal to educate child widows could be as important.

At last the Registrar announced, “Mrs. Anandibai Joshi, Doctor of Medicine, Thesis: “Hindu Obstetrics.”
Spontaneous applause broke out. Anandibai walked over to Dr. Bodley who held the coveted degree in her left hand while extending her right. Silent tears slid down Anandibai’s cheeks. Rama watched Anandibai reach out her left hand to grasp the parchment.
Catching her cousin’s eye, Rama put her hands together. It was a great day for Hindu women.
