Rama’s night was restless. Dr. Bodley and Anandibai had given her an opportunity and counted on her to use it wisely. Rama rose from the bed and tucked the blankets closely around Mano. It was cold in the predawn darkness. Rama opened the curtain and saw a few twinkling stars preparing to disappear in the sun’s first rays.
Srinivas, are you up there in the stars? And if you are, are you on this side of the world or looking down on India? Rama shook her head. I’m being fanciful. Srinivas, what shall I do? Rama thought back to the days on the road with her brother. The days she had begged him to let her recite. The day he told her they were going to Calcutta. How he stood by her and she him. Who would stand by her now?
