Anandibai led the way through the double doors. It was a comfortable room with a warming, black coal fire stove in the fireplace. There were two horsehair sofas and several chairs. The walls were covered by beige paper with raised designs. Rama noticed the lamps had hanging beads. She was glad Mano was finally through the phase where she touched things all the time.
Dr. Bodley stood, her demeanor gracious yet inquisitive.
“Anandibai, how lovely to see you again. And you, Mr. Gopalrao. Please be seated. Pandita Ramabai,” Dr. Bodley held out her hands. “I’ve heard so much about you. It’s wonderful to meet you at last. And you must be Manorama.”
Mano hid behind her mother and didn’t respond.
