Colorful signs above the trolley windows drew Rama’s attention.
“How interesting. The sign above the window says, ‘God helps those who help themselves.’ Are Americans so pious they post signs for unbelievers?”
Anandibai smiled. “Read the second line.”
“’Soapolio — a fine way to help yourself.’ What is Soapolio?”
Gopalrao chuckled. “Tell her, Anandi. See what she thinks of Americans then.”
Anandibai turned to her cousin. “Soapolio is a type of soap. Americans wash frequently and say cleanliness is next to godliness.”
Rama looked over to Gopalrao. “Well, if this soap pleases God, why not use it? How is this ritual different from Hindu practices?”
