A short woman also wearing a sari stood at the bottom of the gangplank
“Pandita Ramabai,” she called in Marathi and waved. “I’m here.”
Rama smiled in relief. When she got closer, Rama saw Anandibai dressed in a distinct manner. Making no concessions to western fashion, the woman wore a bindi on her forehead, red kumkuma at the parting of her hair, bangles, and even nose jewelry. Rama thought her choice to continue wearing the sari fully vindicated. Thank you, Cousin. When Rama and Mano reached the wharf, the women put their palms together and bowed.
“Cousin, it’s a delight to meet you at last. And this must be Manorama?”
“How do you do?” the child said carefully.
“Anandibai, it’s been such a journey but never mind. I’m excited to be here at last. I couldn’t miss your graduation.”
