“Did Mrs. Caines mention the school uniform to you? The students wear dark skirts with white blouses and ties. I like a simple look.” Miss Beale paused. “On the other hand, you’re also Professor of Sanskrit. It won’t do for you to look like a student while you teach. This is an unusual situation. Let me think.”
“I don’t wear English clothing, so there’s no difficulty.”
Miss Beale arched her eyebrows. “You represent the college and must dress accordingly.”
Rama shook her head. “I wear saris. Always. I didn’t come here to become English. I came to learn. Shall we discuss my course of study and my faculty duties?”
Miss Beale opened her mouth, thought better of it, and rearranged some papers on her desk. “Very well,” she said at last. “I suppose your sari will remind the girls not everyone in the world is English.” Miss Beale smiled. “Sister Geraldine warned me you’re stubborn.”
“I’m not stubborn. Simply proud to be Indian.
