“Will you be a good girl for Ajibai?”
“Don’t go.” Mano started to cry.
“We talked about this. Remember? I’m going to a big school. It’s not far away. Not like India.” Rama’s voice trembled. “Ajibai will write letters and tell me all about you, and she’ll read you my letters. You’ll have so much to do. I’ll be back before you miss me.”
“You have to leave now, or you’ll miss the train,” Sister Geraldine said gruffly.
Sometimes Ajibai was too punctual. But she was right. Rama stood, still holding Mano.
“Take her in your arms so she doesn’t feel alone.”
Sister Geraldine stood at the entrance holding Mano while Rama walked to the cart.
“Goodbye, Precious One.” Rama blew a kiss. “Goodbye, Ajibai.”
