“Deaf? That’s ridiculous! I hear every word you say.”
“You wouldn’t be able to hear me if you were sitting ten or twenty feet away. You must select another course of study.”
“No, no, no. I came to England to become a lady doctor. People expect me to carry out the program.”
Mother Superior reached over to pat Rama’s hand. “I know this is upsetting. And I’m sure you would have been a very good doctor. Very compassionate. But it’s impossible. There are other ways to be of service...”
“But it’s my destiny to be a lady doctor,” Rama pleaded.
