Sister Geraldine glowed. “It was such a surprise when I heard your intention to cross the water. I’m amazed your friends allowed it.”
“It wasn’t for them to allow or disallow.” Rama tossed her head. “In fact, the vast majority opposed it. But I had no choice. England’s the only place I can get a proper education.” Rama paused. “I’ve been thinking. It’ll be cumbersome calling you Sister Geraldine all the time, and it’s almost impossible for Mano to say. You’re like a grandmother to us, so Mano and I will call you Ajibai, the Hindi word for grandmother. You can call me Rama.”
“Thank you, Rama. Nuns don’t usually become grandmothers, but there’s no rule against it.” Sister Geraldine smiled. “It’s a great honor.”
Rama nodded. “Good. It’s settled. I’m ready to start earning my way immediately. Whom shall I teach Marathi?”
