“Look, Mano. Never forget India is home. You’ll be a big girl when we come back.” Rama sighed. I’ll come home a different person too. A lady doctor! Father would be so proud.
“Excuse me, Madam?” Rama turned to see a young man dressed in white. “Are you ready to go to your cabin?”
Rama touched Anandibai’s shoulder. “Come.”
The steward took them to a cramped cabin with six berths. Rama was astonished.
“Surely there won’t be six of us in this tiny space!”
“No, Madam. It’s just the three of you.”
“But I was told the ship is full.”
The steward looked uncomfortable. “It is.”
“Then who else is in this cabin?”
“No one. You’re the only Indians traveling with us.”
“Oh.” Rama sat on a bunk. “Just as well. There’s no room for anyone else.”
