Rama's new career is launched. Mrs. Ranade wants Rama to join her for English lessons taught by a female missionary, which brings up the question: Who is a missionary?

“The ladies request you to speak to us weekly in a public setting. Excluding any topics forbidden to women, of course. Perhaps you could take a leadership role in our organization?”
Rama smiled broadly. “Mrs. Ranade, I’m delighted to accept the offer. Nothing could bring me greater pleasure.”
“Good. That’s settled. On another matter, would you like to join my English lessons? I have a tutor, Miss Hurford, who comes twice weekly. She’s a good woman, but she can be tedious. She only agreed to teach me if I allowed her to use the Christian Bible for lessons.”
“I know a few stories from the Bible. Is Miss Hurford a missionary?”
“I’m of the opinion that any foreigner who isn’t in the army or the civil service is a missionary.”
