It was twilight when Bipin arrived. Rama heard him in the entryway. She looked in the mirror, thought about changing her sari, but didn’t.
“Bipin,” she said gliding into the reception room. “I’m glad you’ve come.” She noticed he wasn’t wearing his English clothing. “You look different in the dhoti and kurta.”
“Bipin isn’t a stranger anymore,” Srinivas smiled.
“You’ve made me completely at home. Thank you, Ramabai. I saw Mr. Thakur driving out of town. He said he was returning to Bombay.” Bipin raised an eyebrow. “Will he return?”
“Rama rejected his suit.”
Bipin gave Rama a long look. “You don’t wish to marry?”
Rama felt her stomach drop. So much depended on her answer.
