For six months, Rama studied. The Code of Manu with its adamant restrictions on women made an indelible scar on her heart. A woman was always under a man’s control. She must be confined in the house. Despite all precautions she’ll be disloyal to her husband if she is able. And so on and so forth.
Turning to the Ramayana and the great love between Prince Rama and Sita, Rama read how Sita protected her virtue while in captivity, only to find her husband doubted her word. In the Mahabharata, Rama saw how men used women to their own purposes. Every day Rama sat with the books as if inhaling the ancient culture. Every evening she nursed a piercing headache.
