Rama snuggled closer to her brother. “Srinivas, why do you like the dark?”
“Because I relax. Even if someone is watching he can’t see me directly. No one’s judging whether I look or act like Father or speak as he does.”
“Is it hard being Father’s son?”
“It is for me, because people expect me to be like Father, and I’m not. Learning is hard for me.”
Rama sat up. “What d’you mean? Father keeps you by his side, so you must be wise.”
Srinivas laughed briefly. “Hardly. I learn quickly, but no matter how hard I try, I never achieve full understanding. When Father worships, it’s with his entire being. I just go through the motions.”
Rama didn’t know what to say. “Maybe you have to learn the rules and later they’ll make sense.”
Srinivas jumped up and grabbed the blanket. “C’mon Lal, it’s time to go inside. Tomorrow starts early.”
Rama didn’t understand her brother. Father favored him before everyone. Why did he question himself?
