His mother’s eyes took on a sentimental sheen. “A few months ago, while you were away, your father finalized legal papers to establish George Crowninshield & Sons.”
Jacob’s face lit up. “That’s wonderful! Do my brothers know?”
“I’ve written to all of them. Geordie was here when everything was finalized.”
“I can’t believe it. Do we finally have enough ships and funds?”
“We have enough to make a start. For the near future, you’ll all continue with commissions from Derby and Orne, but it won’t be long before you can come ashore and pursue business as you see fit.”
Mary stood to pour herself a glass brandy. Raising her arm high, she toasted to a dream that had been decades in the making. “To a dream fulfilled,” she said, her eyes finding George’s. She gave him a wink.
“To the future of George Crowninshield & Sons,” George continued, turning to face his son, “and the beginning of the next generation.”
Jacob smiled. “To the next generation.”
