Very well. I’ll play along. “On what grounds?” Nath asked.
“On the grounds that when a pollywog crosses the equator for the first time, he owes homage to King Neptune. Homage which, thus far, you have failed to pay. Fall in line with the other polliwog.”
Shaking his head, Nath stood where Perkins indicated.
A drumbeat commenced as Perkins led the little troop around the Astrea’s main deck before concluding the parade just below the quarterdeck. Nath stifled a chuckle. A man who could only be Master Magee wearing a cotton twill wig that looked like the business end of a mop stood before them. He held a trident in his left hand.
“Bow before King Neptune!” Perkins growled as he pushed down Nath’s head more force than necessary.
“You may lift your heads,” Neptune said. “Do you know why you’re here?”
