Wearing his best suit of clothes, Nate approached his employer’s house. I made my appearance as perfect as possible. My shoes gleam with shiny silver buckles. My coat buttons sparkle, and the white waistcoat my sister embroidered for me is a fair contrast to my dark blue wool coat.
I am confident. I am worthy. I am ready.
Nate rapped the brass door knocker three times. The door opened swiftly, as if the footman had been behind the door waiting. “Captain West, sir. The family awaits you in the drawing room. Come. I will announce you.”
The footman opened the double doors with a flourish, and Nate stepped inside as his name was announced: “Captain Nathaniel West.”
Despite the warm spring day, the atmosphere in the room was icy.
