“Captain West is a very astute young man.”
“So you’ve said before.” Will he never get to the point?
“He did well as a privateer, and his merchant voyages have been equally successful. In addition, he procured good adventure cargo, and has invested wisely.”
“Husband, you try my patience,” she replied with a sigh. “One brags about one’s sons, not one’s employees.”
“Generally, I would agree with you, but it seems highly likely he will join our family soon.” Now this caught her attention. “Captain West came to my office today to explain himself, and to tell me that before he left, Betsey promised not to accept any other suitors. He requested my approval to formally court our daughter and ask her to marry him.”
Eliza stood so abruptly; her chair tipped backward. “What? The cheek. How dare he? He comes from nothing.”
Hasket remained calm. “He seems to think Betsey will accept his suit.”
