“Father is ever practical. But Mother . . .” Betsey shook her head. “Mother rules Salem society.”
“She won’t deny her eldest daughter.” Nate kissed the inside of Betsey’s wrist, and she immediately blushed. “To return to the question, will you accept my suit?”
“I notice you don’t speak of love.”
Love?
“I will not deceive you with unproven declarations. If you accept my suit, I’m sure we will grow to love each other. You are a beautiful, intelligent woman. You need only the proper setting to outshine your mother in Salem society. I promise to provide that setting.”
Nate kept his gaze on Betsey’s face and kissed the inside of her wrist again.
Betsey withdrew her hand. “You presume a great deal.”
“I do, for I am determined to achieve a position in society. I promise that I shall always honor you and care for you. You have nothing to lose by accepting my suit and everything to gain.”
