Elias pulled his shirt cuffs below his coat sleeves and extended his arm to Betsey as she rounded the stairs.
“Dear sister, you look a picture.” He kissed Betsey’s cheek. “I haven’t seen this dress before. Is it new?”
“You know it is,” Patsy answered before Betsey could contribute something caustic. “She’s been fussing about it for weeks.”
“I don’t listen to such prattle. Besides I’ve been at school. Come, Betsey, let me tell you about Captain West.” Elias led his sister into the drawing room, leaning to whisper into her ear, “You should grab his attention before our sisters get him in their sights.”
Betsey raised her eyebrows. “Have you become a matchmaker?”
Elias winced. “Hardly. But Nate is a rare gem. If you but polish him a bit, I’m sure he’ll outshine the normal selection of merchant sons.”
