After the funeral, Mary engaged a housekeeper for her brother and returned home. Richard threw himself into his work on behalf the Massachusetts Council, outfitting two privateers for the new state. Hasket invested in thirteen successful privateers. With every voyage, they made the enemy weaker and Hasket richer.
“But if we lose, we’ll all be in prison at Halifax,” Mary complained to George. “What’s wrong with Washington’s generals? We’re cut off from the other colonies.”
“We’re not colonies any longer. We’re states,” George reminded her.
Mary slapped the newspaper beside her plate. “This isn’t about my vocabulary. Did you read this? The British already control New York City. Now they’ve taken Fort Ticonderoga and captured our supplies.”
