“If you do not lower the bridge now, my men will fire until you do.”
Captain John Felt, a merchant George recognized by sight, shoved his way to the front of the crowd. “You had better not fire!” his voice rang out. “Look around you. We are a multitude, and each of us is ready to die. Are your lads ready to give up their lives to cross a bridge?”
“Captain Felt, I shall pass over this bridge before I return to Boston, even if it means I remain here until next autumn.”
“We wouldn’t care for that.”
Leslie stamped his foot. “By God, I will not be defeated by the likes of you!”
“You’ve already been baffled,” Captain Felt replied.
