“Tell us,” Sarah demanded. “Is Captain Derby arrested?”

“Tell us what happened after Father met with Governor Gage.”
Hasket rubbed the back of his neck and poured himself a brandy. “Ladies?” he asked, gesturing to the empty crystal glasses still available.
Mary glanced toward her stepmother. “I think we could both do with a small one. Now tell us.”
Hasket served the women before sitting down with his own larger glass.
“Governor Gage summoned Father, Timothy Pickering, and other members of the Committee, and ordered them to cancel the assembly, which it was too late to do. The members were already meeting. He threatened to stop the meeting by force, and he had troops ready to do it, but for some reason, he didn’t give the order. I gather it was a tense meeting.”
